The History of Minecraft

Minecraft started with an idea, just like most great things. Created by a single man, Minecraft has grown into the top selling PC game in history. “Notch”, the creator of Minecraft, is a Swedish man that also owns the company Mojang AB, the company that makes Minecraft. In Minecraft, his name above his head has golden text. Notch, who’s actual name is Markus, starting programming at age 7. He got the idea for Minecraft when he was working at a company named Jalbum when he played a game named Infiniminer. He then made a game named Cave Game because he realized that Infiniminer had a great idea, but limited gameplay. Cave Game was later changed to Order of the Stone, then to Minecraft. Below is a test of Cave Game from Notch’s YouTube channel:

CLASSIC VERSION:

Classic Version is the beginning, the genesis of Minecraft. The time known as the Classic Age was between May 10, 2009, and December 22, 2009. In the early stages of this version included the physics, stone and dirt, level generator, creative mode, trees, and water/lava. If you think about it, that is pretty much the basic game of Minecraft. Also, so far in this game there is NO survival. Multiplay was releases on June 8th, and that brought in a whole new aspect. New blocks were introduced, and much more. Later, Survival was introduced, with breaking and placing blocks, mobs, health, fall damage, and everyone’s favorite, the creeper. So far there is iron and gold ores. That is the very basic parts of survival, which is classic mode.

INDEV VERSION:

This version is where Minecraft sort of takes off. Torches were added, along with fire, chests, and Bow/Arrow. Crafting was also introduced in this version. Also, things that eventually got taken out were added like emerald, gears, and being spawned in a house with a bunch of tools and items. Also farming was introduced with hoes, farmland, crops, seeds, etc. Towards the end of the version, there was an update that changed mobs loots/drops.

INFDEV VERSION:

This update was the start of infinite worlds. Before this version, you were stuck in a box of land. New trees were added, sand and gravel back, and arrows re-added also. This version was more of a change to the game rather than added items. Caves were also added along with dungeons. Also in this version a ton of bugs were fixed. I don’t really think that this was the most exciting version, but a lot of things that would bug me now were fixed then.

ALPHA VERSION:

MANY, MANY bug fixes. That kind of sums the last half of the time of this version. As for the first half is the complete opposite. SOOOO many new items were added, I was amazed. I will show you in a list to show you just how many there are:

  • Stairs
  • Levers
  • Stone Buttons
  • Pressure Plates
  • Iron Doors
  • Redstone
  • Redstone Torch
  • Redstone Dust
  • Snow
  • Ice
  • Snowballs
  • Boats
  • Cacti
  • Milk
  • Leather
  • Slimeballs
  • Brick Blocks (Of all kinds)
  • Clay
  • Reeds
  • Paper
  • Books
  • Music Discs
  • Power Minecarts
  • Storage Minecarts
  • Eggs
  • Chicken Meat
  • Jukebox
  • Fences
  • Compass
  • Fishing Rod
  • Clock
  • Portal
  • Pumpkin
  • Jack-O-Lantern
  • Glowstone
  • Netherrack
  • Soul Sand

I have also noticed that a lot of people liked the Alpha Version more than any other version. Obviously in versions afterward, they have the same stuff, but people seem to have be the most happy at the time of this version because of all the new features (Items).

BETA VERSION:

Beta version introduced I believe the biggest update at one time of the whole game. That was the 1.8 or Adventure update. It introduced Enderman (My least favorite mob), Silverfish, and Cave Spiders. New blocks included stone brick, which is Etho’s favorite block (Etho if you are reading this, you are my favorite Minecraft commentator!), Fence Gates, Glass Panes, Iron Bars, and Melons. It also introduced many structures found in game like Villages, Strongholds, Abandoned Mineshafts, and Ravines. Five new foods were included, with Melon slices, Raw Chicken, Raw Beef, Cooked Chicken, and Steak. Also included was sprinting, which is a very popular and useful feature. Moss stone was changed with a background of cobblestone. Pistons were added so redstone was more fun. Shears were added, too. 1.6 was another addition to the Beta version, which is probably a contender to be the biggest update. It was a big update, but there wasn’t really much to it other than bug fixes. Things that were added included maps, trapdoors, and tall grass. Beta was definitely the biggest leap ever seen in Minecraft, with MANY items, fixes, and other good things

OFFICIAL GAME:

The official game brought my FAVORITE part of Minecraft. Enchanting. Enchanting is my favorite part because I am into mob spawning, and also I am very impatient with slow tools. Potions were also added, even though I haven’t really done much with that. Minecon happened when the game was released, something that I really wanted to go to, but couldn't. Breeding was added, too. Also, many potion items were added, along with The End. In 1.1, where we are officially now. Bows are now enchantable, sheep eat grass to grow wool. Languages are added, a total of 56 of them, were added. Beaches were re-added, and melons and pumpkins can grow on plain dirt.

Thank You

Thank you for taking time and reading my article. I put a lot of time into my work and I hope you enjoy this game and buy it if you don’t have it currently. Minecraft has evolved so much in 3 years and it is a real success story. Once again thank you and have a great day.
